Study the uses for Chinese verb yào 要

Verb used to indicate want / ask for / beg something. Usually seen together with xiǎng, meaning want to get something. The Chinese verb yào can also mean be about to / to be going to, being used before a verb to indicate future tense in Chinese.
动词,表示希望将某种事物归自己所有。常与”想”联用,表示想得到某物。也指即将来临,常常用于将来时态。

Yào as want / ask for / beg

I asked money from my mum wǒ zhǎo mā mā yào qián 我找妈妈要钱。
She says that she wants that purple mini skirt  tā shuō tā yào nà jiàn zǐ sè de mí nǐ qún 她说她要那件紫色的迷你裙。
My little brother wants to eat ice-cream wǒ dì dì yào chī bīng qí lín 我弟弟要吃冰淇林。
hat American wants a cheese burger and a coca-cola nà gè měi guó rén yào yī gè zhī shì hàn bǎo,yī gè kě kǒu kě lè 那个美国人要一个芝士汉堡,一个可口可乐。
He asked me if I wanted some dessert  tā wèn wǒ yào bú yào tián pǐn 他问我要不要甜品。

 

Yào as be about to / to be going to

I’m going to travel in Africa next month  wǒ xià gè yuè yào qù fēi zhōu lǚ xíng  我下个月要去非洲旅行。
Mum is going to visit grandmother this afternoon  mā mā xià wǔ yào qù nǎi nǎi jiā kàn tā 妈妈下午要去奶奶家看她。
y dad says if I pass the exam, he will buy me a new bike  bà bà shuō rú guǒ wǒ kǎo shì tōng guò le,yào gěi wǒ mǎi yī gè xīn zì xíng chē  爸爸说如果我考试通过了,要给我买一个新自行车。
Brother in law is asking his boss if he has to work this weekend  jiě fū zài wèn tā de lǎo bǎn zhè gè zhōu mò yào bú yào jiā bān  姐夫在问他的老板这个周末要不要加班。
 Hurry up, the train is going to leave  kuài diǎn,huǒ chē yào kāi le 快点,火车要开了。
